This series was created during the first Covid-19 lockdown in Italy.
In the first weeks of being confined to my home, I read a UN report about the increase in cases of domestic violence against women during quarantine, a disturbing trend consistent throughout the world, from USA to Brazil, Singapore to Germany.

The UN calls this a Shadow Pandemic.

I turned to myths, fairy tales and world literature to illustrate issues of femicide, rape and domestic violence against women, as well as to highlight women’s historic struggle for creative expression, self determination and autonomy over our bodies. All these issues seemed amplified in the confined space of lockdown.

I used my body to tell these stories in acknowledgement of the limits placed on women’s bodies by society’s expectations and male violence, as well as for the many facing isolation alone, a humble contribution to inspire people to create even in solitude.
